Benefits of Goal Setting

There are times were we want to do a numerous amount of things or have so many deadlines, we don’t know how to organize ourselves. We end up frustrated and not getting much done. There are times we wake up and don’t look up to anything new in life, any motivation, or risks to take. Your daily life feels monotonous. This can be very boring and leads you to failure and depression.

Objectives should be set to present some difficulty, with the intention to arouse interest and to find some result. The problem I had was the lack of confidence that caused discouragement. Sometimes it may happen when we have low confidence in our chances but our interests in the activity is high. By this I mean that I have a realistic desire but believe I can never achieve it. If we use the performance goal (having the intention that we will appreciate the achieving improvements in performance) we can create an increase in confidence. We will increase confidence in the triumphs and by this bring down the losses, so, we should draw small goals to have small victories every day.

I have always had an agenda or diary were I usually write everything I want to get done in life, but in the end I never follow everything I put down because my objectives feel unreal or too far away from attaining. My goals became desires that I could only dream about. These past years I have been more specific in goal setting. I learned that setting goals is a powerful process for thinking about your future and working on your self-confidence. It is a way to keep us alive, feel motivated and a way for us to organize our time and resources so we can make the most of our life.

A goal can be anything, a short-term motivation or a challenging experience. I suggest using the SMART method, which requires goals to be Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-sensitive.
We can also follow role models to set our goals. Models that you can feel identified. If they got there, so can you!

These are three key points on goal settings:

  1. Think about what you want to do first. Once you have your goal you must think about all the possible ways for you to get there. If you want to become a professional dancer, then you might start of joining a dance school, get a workout plan, etc.
  2. Set short-term and long-term goals. If your goal is to become a professional dancer, you need a plan! Your long-term goal is eventually becoming a dancer and being able to audition and work as a dancer. But before that you need to set short-term goals in order to achieve your long-term goal. In this case, receive a numerous amount of lessons, working every day in all the different aspects you need in order to become a confident and outstanding dancer.
  3. Patience. You cannot assume that the journey will be easy! You cannot become something from one day to another. There is a process for everything. But goal setting can keep you motivated in this journey. As I mentioned, becoming a professional dancer takes time. You must work on your body, strength, muscles, flexibility, musical rhythm, and so on. You cannot think that you are already a dancer because you joined a dance school and received a few classes.

As said, goal setting can raise self-confidence as you achieve the goals you have set. (Remember that as you go accomplishing the small goals, you are a step closer to your final and main goal. Taking small steps are very helpful to keep you going and improve your confidence).
The benefits of goal setting are certainly related to personal growth and development that will help you boost your self-image. You will become more aware about your future and have a clear thought about what you want in life. You will learn about your strengths and weaknesses. You will feel you have renewed energy that will help you focus on your choices, decisions and behaviors. Setting goals will definitely increase self-control, making you and only you in charge of your life!
